Welcome to the Health and Fitness Check-In column of The Christian Home Carnival, posted weekly. For encouragement and accountability, you can check in using the comments at the bottom of this post. Please feel free to join any time, and at whatever level of fitness and health you currently have.

Why is it that fall always brings colds? Probably it’s because the windows are closed all day.  Or at least that’s what I tell myself.

In any case, it’s a good excuse to go out as soon as the sun peaks through the clouds.  When Mr. 16 and I were studying French together, the sun came out, for the first time in days.  We put our books down, and he rushed outside.  I alerted the rest of the family, and the girls and I strolled down to the river, hurrying inside when purple clouds rolled near.  My husband, however, left his study a few minutes too late and was drenched in a violent downpour and a wind so violent that he could hardly walk.  Miss 13 was envious.

Here’s how I did this week.

Record my fitness goals each day…No, this is a habit I still have to get into.

Do my eye exercises 3x a week … Yes!  After trying to fix Mr. 16’s glasses with my glasses on, I realized that I’m a candidate for bifocals.  Here’s to eye exercises!  Hopefully they will make a difference.

Go for a daily walk and take at least 6000 steps a day … I did not want to get soaked like my husband did, so I took few outdoor walks.  Instead I tried to be more active inside…stairs, running for things myself, going to the kid to see their schoolwork rather than always asking them to come to me, wandering around unnecessarily.  It worked, more or less, and I’m glad because we have neither space nor money for a treadmill.  Though I did not meet my goal, I averaged over 5000 steps a day.  Not too bad for a sniffly, rainy week.

Do my physio exercises daily and slowly build up to the full program by November 30 … No.

Avoid sugar five days a week … Well, we had oriental crunch, the one goodie I cannot resist.  So I didn’t.

Eat lots of vegetables, including fresh ones, and yoghurt … Yes, and it was good.

Relax daily… I took Miss 13 and Miss 11 out to a special judo class where I just sat in a chair and read.  There was nothing I had to do, neaten, cook, fold, or clean up; no one I needed to tuck in or talk to; and no interruptions.  It was blissful and so relaxing!  I’ll have to see if I can duplicate the experience at home…although when I’m there I will tuck people in and talk to them.

Have fun with the kids, including active fun… When I was looking for sturdy white fabric to fix judo outfits, the Little Misses had a wonderful time rediscovering and remaking old clothes from the ragbag.  We walked to the river in a brief moment of sunshine and took a few more short walks.  We read out loud.   And tonight we plan to watch Mist, a great movie about a sheepdog puppy.

How about you? Did you exercise, eat well, and relax happily this week? Let’s encourage each other to care well for the bodies God has given us. It’s been a rainy week here, too. I like how you found ways to keep active. I have to make myself remember to not ask so many favors of my kids to fetch things. I hope the bifocals help. I think I need them too. 🙂

Yes, when I was ill, they did all my running around for me; now I need to take over again. And I need to keep them moving. 🙂

Awesome week! It’s amazing how much walking we do just keeping home and taking care of others. I was surprised at how many steps I take just doing my usual things. One thing I do to add a little more movement to my day is to pace back and forth when I read aloud to my children. At first it was strange to them but now they are used to it.

    Have a great new week!

Oh, dear, I’d take so many steps if I did that! I’m going to try it … at least once. 🙂
