Weekly Wrap-Up: Butterfly Show Pictures

In my life this week

I was in pain for a few days after hurting my neck.  What an effect pain has on everything! Fortunately the worst of the problem resolved itself, and my talented physiotherapist made a huge difference.  But I still ache, and apparently it will take 4-6 weeks for complete healing.  As I wrote in my Fit Mommy post,   I had issues with the C2C3 joint in the neck, causing immobility and pain from my cheekbone and ear all the way down to my shoulder and collarbone. How did I do that to myself, you wonder? I slept wrong, apparently!

In our homeschool this week

  • Miss 13, who plays recorder beautifully, has taken over Miss 9’s recorder lessons.  That’s a joy for both of them and a relief for me.  However, it’s hard to find a recorder teacher for Miss 13 who has advanced beyond my ability to teach.  We have a good set of teaching books and she manages quite well on her own with the input I am able to give.  In fact, after the last Christmas concert someone told her, “You’ve completely changed how I think about recorders!”
  • There’s one subject that we love to gather round for.  Mr. 16 is assigned a chapter of Dave Ramsey’s Foundations in Personal Finance curriculum every week, and we all pull up to enjoy the videos.  There’s already been talk of starting over at the beginning soon!

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share

I’ve listed some helpful questions to discuss when doing problem-solving in math.  Thinking about how to solve problems can make a huge difference in actually doing them.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing

  • Swimming lessons started again. Only the Little Misses have lessons, but the rest of us are allowed to use the pool for the afternoon, so we all enjoy it.
  • We visited a stunning butterfly exhibit. Butterflies flitted everywhere, stopped to enjoy juice from orange sections, and rested on our fingers and clothes.  Obviously, I took some pictures.
  • Miss 9 and I voted in our provincial elections; the rest of the children have come voting with me so often they were not interested.
  • Two of the girls went for a sleepover…and a few days later they slept outside on our trampoline under the stars, bundled up in two sleeping bags each and wearing hats.

My favorite thing this week was

Watching the butterflies.

Questions/thoughts I have

When kids obsess about getting schoolwork done, it makes them tense and nervous.  How do you move from worrying about the work to just doing it, joyfully and peacefully?  Enough sleep is one key, and I think time management is another.

Things I’m working on

  • Lots of reviews.
  • Preparing for Canadian Thanksgiving.
  • Tweaking school so it will work better for us.
  • Exercise.
  • Resting to heal my neck.
  • Keeping up with the house.
  • Redoing our Saturday job list.
  • Praying the septic system will soon be fixed so that we can do laundry and shower.

I’m reading

Ezekiel, Wild Animals I Have Known, and Millionaire Women Next Door (just curious; I have no aspirations to become one of them, but the mindset may help with ordinary finances.)  I finished Doing Virtuous Business and Married Mom, Solo Parent and hope to post some reviews soon.

Reading aloud, we finished Salt in His Blood, an exciting sea story/biography, and are    continuing Little Women and Jan en Janneke in Canada.

I’m grateful for

  • Having my neck vertebrae slip back into place.
  • My physiotherapist, as well as  my husband’s benefits that give me a few visits a year.
  • Warm, warm weather just a few days after the first big frost.  (My friend JoAnn has snow!)
  • The butterfly show.
