Fit Mommy Check-In: Crash

encouraging each other

to care well

for the bodies God has given us

Welcome to the Health and Fitness Check-In column of The Christian Home Carnival, posted weekly. For encouragement and accountability, you can check in using the comments at the bottom of this post. Please feel free to join any time, and at whatever level of fitness and health you currently have.

I was doing very well, walking a lot, being active around the house, keeping track of my exercise.  We washed windows on Monday, and I even went for a moonlit walk out beyond the woods with Mr. 16  and his big coyote stick.

On Tuesday, I swam 4 laps while the children were having swimming lessons.  It was so much fun, and I had been feeling so strong the last few weeks that I tried another 4.  Oh, yes, I meant to take it easy, but I was huffing and puffing.

And I felt great.  Alive, energetic, and so happy that I could manage such a thing after being ill and weak for years!

When we got home, however, I was no longer able to keep up.  Making supper taxed me beyond reason.  The next morning reality hit.  My muscles weren’t sore like healthy muscles get after exercise.  They were weak, tired, and barely able to function.  Against my doctor’s explicit instructions, I had done aerobic exercise…and, as he had promised, I was on the couch.

Although Thursday was already much better, I’ll need to take it very easy for the next week. No grocery shopping unless I take along a child to do all the lifting.  No grating cabbage or scrubbing carrots.  Even stirring fried  rice can exhaust me.  I must let myself recover completely before exercising again.  (And if you’re wondering if you should be as careful as I am, probably not.  I have what one doctor calls exercise intolerance and another calls mitochondrial damage.  It’s just a left-over from years of untreated celiac disease.)

On the bright side, recovering relatively quickly means that I am getting healthier.  I remember when a 15 yard stumbling jog to save the neighbor’s mail from the wind put me on the couch for a week.

I do hope your week was better.  Just keep on keeping on!

Record my fitness goals each day…yes.

Do my eye exercises 3x a week … no.

Go for a daily walk and take at least 6000 steps a day … Here are the numbers:  5500, 8500 5900, 5800 and 8 laps in the pool, 1200, 3400.  I am going to try to avoid going over 6000 steps for the next few days.

Do my physio exercises daily and slowly build up to the full program by November 30 … No, I did housecleaning instead, including washing windows.  Being tired after only one window is a definite sign that I really need those physio exercises to get strong.  But I’m not attempting them for the next while, until I feel good again.

Avoid sugar five days a week … No.  We had Apples Breton Style and peanut butter cookies.

Eat lots of vegetables, including fresh ones, and yoghurt … Very little yoghurt.  Quite a few vegetables, but not many green ones.

Relax daily…After this week’s scare, I’m going to be lying down for 30 minutes each day, using a timer to make sure that the 30 minutes won’t become 3 hours.

Have fun with the kids, including active fun… We swam (!!), walked, cooked, laughed, read aloud and hung out together.

How about you? Did you exercise, eat well, and relax happily this week? Let’s encourage each other to care well for the bodies God has given us. Oh dear. I am sorry you had a scare. But, you are making great progress and I am sure that you will continue to do so! Swimming would be fun this time of the year indoors. I may surprise the kids and go once this winter.

So glad you are getting healthier that your crash aren’t lasting as long. I pray you are 100% soon. Sounds like a good week otherwise. I hope you continue to feel better.
