Fit Mommy Friday: Take An Exercise Break

encouraging each other

to care well

for the bodies God has given us

Welcome to the Health and Fitness Check-In column of The Christian Home Carnival, posted weekly. For encouragement and accountability, you can check in using the comments at the bottom of this post. Please feel free to join any time, and at whatever level of fitness and health you currently have.

Inspired by Briana’s comment last week, I decided to institute an exercise break in our homeschool at 10 every morning.  For fifteen minutes we’ll walk and play hard outside or exercise inside (and by that I mean more than just walking to the Kleenex box).

When we started homeschooling a decade and a half ago, we spent a lot of time outside. Now, with older children and heavier workloads, we’ve forgotten the joys of ‘recess’, the favorite subject of most elementary school kids.  What foolishness!  Life and learning are so much better after a bit of outdoor fun.

Are you going to try recess in your home and homeschool?

As a bonus, I am now walking and doing my physio exercises regularly.  Never before have I met so many of my Fit Mommy goals!

Record my fitness goals each day…Yes!

Do my eye exercises 3x a week …  Yes!

Go for a daily walk and take at least 6000 steps a day … Yes!  In fact, on average I exceeded that: Friday 5400, Saturday 8200, Monday 5500, Tuesday 7800, Wednesday 6200, Thursday 6900. But this morning the dogs and I hurried home when we heard gunshots.  It’s hunting season, once again.

Do my physio exercises daily and slowly build up to the full program by November 30 … I did them 4 times, and that’s a new record.

Avoid sugar five days a week … Yes, although I conveniently forgot that molasses is almost the same thing.  But the apple gingerbread cake was delicious.

Eat lots of vegetables, including fresh ones, and yoghurt … Not much yoghurt, but lots of vegetables including ‘weird’ produce like Jerusalem artichokes, horseradish, and fresh arugula.

Relax daily… Not enough, and I can tell.  It may be time to start taking naps again, just half an hour every afternoon.

Have fun with the kids, including active fun… We went walking with the dogs, hayed by hand to get winter bedding for the 2 ducks and 4 chickens, and had recess 4 days out of 5.  And we read aloud, enjoyed our new fireplace insert, and ate lots of fresh popcorn.

How about you? Did you exercise, eat well, and relax happily this week? Let’s encourage each other to care well for the bodies God has given us. Please link up your health and fitness post in the comments below, and don`t forget to link back here from your post. Then enjoy visiting and encouraging other Fit Mommies just like you.

So glad things are going well. Though be careful if it’s hunting season. 🙂

I didn’t have the money to pay for Askimet monthly, so far this new spam blocker seems to work well. Guess we’ll just wait and see.

Getting outside every day is a must, but as you said, it is harder with older children’s work loads. I hope you have another great week. I’m behind on my commenting!

Wow! You had an amazing week. Funny, you were inspired to take an exercise break during school and then I didn’t even check in! I’ve been homeschooling for almost as long as you have but I have never made it out of Kindergarten! Two years from now may be my last time to teach kinder. It’s a crazy, fun life, this homeschooling.
