Fit Mommy Friday: Playing in the Pool

encouraging each other to care well for the bodies God has given us

My personal goal is to regain strength after a debilitating illness so that I can live a healthy, active life with my family.

Your goal may be to lose weight, look better, feel better, or run a marathon. Whatever it is, please join Fit Mommy any time, no matter what your current level of fitness is. You can check in using the comments at the bottom of this post.

This week I played Marco Polo (a kind of water-tag) in the pool with the kids. For half an hour at a time, I would walk, dive, swim, chase, and even run in the pool. Of course, if I ran I’d have to be very calm for the next while, but I could keep up with the kids and we had so much fun! What’s more, I did this for four hot days in a row! Yes, my goal of living a healthy active life with my family is starting to become a reality. Praise the Lord!

Here’s how I did with my specific fitness goals this week.

Record my fitness accomplishments each day… Yes.

Do 10 repetitions of my eye exercises 5 days a week and relax my eyes …Yes to relaxing, no to exercising.

Go for a daily walk and average 7000 steps a day … I took a few walks, but most of my recorded steps came from gardening and shopping. Those games of Marco Polo also added steps but my pedometer isn’t waterproof so I can only guess at how much they added. Here’s how much I walked outside the water this week: 5800, 6100, 7500, 7000, 6000, 8500, for an average of 6800; supposing that playing in the pool added an average of 500 a day, the total average would be 7300 steps. I’m pleased with that.

Have good posture and do core strengthening exercises while walking… Working on it.

Be usefully active for 1 to 2 hours a day, 6 days a week, without overdoing it … Yes, gardening, hanging out laundry, shopping, and playing with the kids.

Avoid sugar five days a week … Yes.

Eat lots of vegetables, including fresh ones, and yoghurt … Lots of vegetables, especially asparagus, fresh greens, cabbage, and radishes, but again no yoghurt. I’ve just been too busy to make any.

Prepare and eat one fermented food a week… I was going to make ginger carrots, but we ate most of the carrots. Since I’d made no yoghurt I did not have the necessary whey for the ginger carrot recipe anyhow. So I used a lot of the ginger for Asian salad and it was delicious and very healthy.

Relax daily…No. I was still too busy. But I’ve been sleeping longer nights, and that makes a difference.

Cut something out of my schedule…For now I’m trying to keep up with the daily schooling, gardening, and housework and trying to catch up on various commitments. Once things are finished, they will be finished. And I’ll say ‘no’ to further commitments.

Have fun with the kids, including active fun…We gardened, swam, and walked.

How about you? Did you exercise, eat well, and relax happily this week?

  1. I always loved being in the water during warm weather with the boys when we lived back east. I’m not as eager here as the water temps do not seem nearly warm enough for me.

I’m finally taking the ‘bull by the horns’ and attempting to reclaim health. I blogged about it this week and plan to write updates along the way.

Sounds like such a great week. I would love to have a pool, is it above ground or inground? Either way would be nice. So glad you are doing so well with your health. That truly is a blessing. 🙂

Yes, a pool is a blessing. Ours is above-ground and came with the house. We didn’t want it at first and did have one near-fatal accident, but now we’re very happy with it. (And very thankful for emergency crews.)
