Weekly Wrap Up: Happily Moving Along

In my life this week

Our poor grapevines and asparagus showed us we’d had another frost, but now it’s hot, hot, hot.  We work in the garden for a while in the mornings and then head inside where it’s cooler to do schoolwork.

In our homeschool

Mr. 18 is still working hard, but now that it feels like summer it’s getting more and more difficult to focus.  Only one more month, and his homeschooling journey is finished!

Miss 15 is continuing to read a lot and now has energy to do some light gardening as well.  There are very few things as healthy as sitting in the warm sun, digging in the dirt.  Homeschooling is about a lot more than book learning anyhow.

The Little Misses have only two weeks to go.  So exciting!  We’ve started the latest learning project:  the Greek alphabet.  Greek letter cards from Trivium Pursuit are hanging up on our linen closet door.

In our garden… We are still eating asparagus, chives, and wild and cultivated greens.  The strawberries are flowering, and so are the chives, and the red currant bushes are full of tiny green currants.  Our garden is almost ready for the next big planting, but we’ll hold off on the peppers and tomatoes for another week since cold night time temperatures are expected.  We’ve also planted home-started petunias and marigolds from seeds we saved.  Our friends, the new bees, have arrived, and so have our enemies, the black flies and horse flies.

In the kitchen… We tried the pizza from the Gluten Free Baking Mix Cookbook.  Finally a gluten free pizza that tastes almost like the commercial variety!  My husband found some very high grade steak for half price and barbequed it to perfection when we had guests.  It was the best steak I’ve ever had, so juicy and tender!  We also had a novel bacon, onion, carrot, pepper, bean, and asparagus stir fry.  So easy and so delicious.  And there was an ice cream sale and we’re sampling all sorts of new kinds of  gluten free ice cream.  Obviously, we had a good food week.

Some of my favorite things were

  • Looking out the kitchen window to see three young archers, all in a row, aiming at an old pumpkin in our garden.
  • Eating all that delicious food.
  • Gardening.
  • Listening to the birds in the early morning.  Living close to a river, we have a lot of birds and they love to sing.
  • Reading Mr. 18’s Dutch novel out loud with him.
  • Watching Miss 10 work on her nature guidebook.
  • Checking our lung capacity for Miss 12’s science course.  Mr. 18 has over 1 gallon, Miss 12 has 10 cups, Miss 10 has 8 cups, and I have 6 cups lung capacity.

Questions/thoughts I have… I wonder if it is possible to increase one’s lung capacity without aerobic exercise, which I’m not allowed to do. You know, almost every day I learn something myself from the kids’ homeschooling work.

Fitness… Once again I averaged 10,000 steps a day, and I gardened as much as possible.    We ate well, and I relaxed adequately, most days.  That half hour of lying in bed, reading my Bible and dozing, is one of the best parts of my day.

Things I’ve been working on

  • Homeschooling.
  • Gardening and yard work.
  • Feeding my family.
  • Sewing some pyjama shorts for Miss 12.
  • Remembering to relax, eat well, and walk.
  • Reading. Reviewing. Thinking.
  • Embracing a Gluten Free Life.

We’re watching… We all enjoyed The Swiss Family Robinson, available on YouTube.  A young friend who speaks Indonesian understood the pirates. They are not just speaking gibberish, but a real language!

I’m reading… Psalms.  I finished The Sparrow Found a House.  Now I’m reading Pinterest Power, and Mathematics: Is God Silent.  Someday soon I will find a quiet corner to finish Les Miserables, an audio drama, but audiobooks don’t work very well for me.

Reading Aloud… We’re reading 1 Chronicles and Madame Curie, written by her daughter Eve, as well as various books for school.

When my husband is home for meals we read Matthew.

I’m grateful for …Summer and gardening.

Enjoyed catching up with you, Annie Kate. I love this time of the year. I was able to get on the hammock in the sun for a while and it felt so good.
