Your Local Public Library

library sign After the Bible, the library is probably the most valuable resource we homeschoolers have access to, and it amazes me that some people homeschool without it.  Even those of us who use it regularly often do not take full advantage of its many resources.

In fact, even though our family uses the library so faithfully that our librarian refers to us fondly as “my homeschoolers,” we, too, had been neglecting a lot of what the library offers.  So I decided to start the year off by encouraging us all to use this free and wonderful resource a whole lot more.

Since we moved, leaving behind the best ever library, it’s been hard to get into the new one. It’s smaller. But it is part of a wonderful lending group of a bunch of smaller libraries. I can get any book I want, but I have to wait. See, I am pathetic. I want to hold the book in my hand, and not make a trip to pick up a book. They even have ebooks. No excuses for me.

  2. We love our library! It’s my practice to reserve books online every time I hear good recommendations. That way, there are always wonderful surprises waiting for us every time we go there (Often things I can’t even remember ordering…).

Jenn, we have to wait, too, because our little country branch is tiny. We’re used to it by now. But I like Nelleke’s point of view: there’s always a wonderful surprise waiting if you reserve books ahead of time.

On the other hand, Nelleke, if you are busy and three excellent books arrive in the same week, that can be frustrating. I’ve learned to let them go back and reserve them again rather than mess up my life trying to read them at the time. How do you deal with that problem?

We use our library a lot, always have. It’s such a great resource.
