You may recall that our family wants to learn the entire book of Proverbs, God’s curriculum for wisdom, and that we have progressed a bit in memorizing it. Currently, rather than memorizing Proverbs chapter by chapter, we are concentrating on a few verses per chapter using a unique study guide that the children (ages 6-16) all love. Hidden Treasures: Searching for Wisdom, by Pam Forster brings the wise messages of Proverbs home in a memorable way.
The author’s family had long studied Proverbs using pictures and wanted to help other families do the same. They set up a contest asking young people to illustrate a proverb, and chose 90 pictures out of more than 500 entries submitted by illustrators ranging from 6 years old to late teens. These 90 they included in their book. Some pictures are funny, some confusing, and all are memorable.
Although there are many ways to use this book, what we do is to find all the pictures relevant to our chapter and study them. Then we read the chapter out loud, and afterwards the children, beginning with the little ones, try to tell which proverb goes with which picture. This is a lot of fun and really focuses our attention on these verses, which we usually review again the next day. Not only that, but some of the pictures are so graphic that we know the verses almost immediately.
We plan to put each of the texts on an index card to review them regularly along with our other Bible texts. This job will be given to our 9-year old for 25c a card.
Hidden Treasures contains much more than just the illustrations for studying Proverbs. We plan to use some other suggestions in the future, perhaps as in this review. For now, we are still enjoying the illustrations (we’re on Proverbs 23), and have a ways to go in memorizing those 90 verses. In the meantime, we are growing in wisdom. Praise the Lord!
