The Last Week–We Hope

Photo from Purdon Conservation Area Website

This is the week we plan to finish all the schoolwork, Lord willing.  The marks and yearly summaries may have to wait until next week, though.

We also need to do a lot of garden planting—all the warm-soil crops, such as squashes; and of course, there’s a lot of weeding to do.  The raspberries are also starting to ripen and, thanks to Mr 15’s bees, we’re expecting a bumper crop.

On Wednesday, we are scheduled to pick up about 70 baby chicks.  We’re almost ready for them—just need to set up feeders, waterers, and heat lamps.

And we were hoping to go on a nature outing to a fen full of showy lady slippers.

And we were hoping to attend the RCMP musical ride as well….

We will most likely not be able to manage both outings (hopefully one will work out), but we don’t have much choice about our other plans.   Fortunately, the children are in charge of the chicks and they also do the heavy weeding, so the week should not be too exhausting for me.  At this moment, it just sounds wonderfully exciting.

And for when I need to rest, I’ve got an amazing book to review by Stephanie Langford from Keeper of the Home.

May you also have a blessed week!

May your week be blessed, as well! 70 chicks would be a lot to manage, but I imagine your children are up to the task. That’s awesome. Are they meat birds or layers? Our weather is making any outing a chore. I hope you are able to finish your lessons and enjoy a little rest and relaxation this summer.

Yes, 70 chicks is a lot, more than we’ve ever had! Half are brown layers (with a rooster to keep them in line) and the other half are white meat birds. At the beginning they will all look the same, though.

The children are up to the task, and can even do the butchering!

As for lessons…well it’s 10:45 and three of the kids are outside playing scrub baseball, one is taking care of cows, and the other one is preparing a list of books for a wonderful review opportunity we were just blessed with. The three outside are letting off steam because they are terribly excited about the new books we’ll be reviewing. 🙂

I’ll be thinking of you this week! I think it sounds wonderful to have the chicks–my children would love to do that. Maybe we’ll consider doing that in the future–but just a few, not 70! lol. I hope you and the children have a lovely week–I wish my son could meet your kids, mine is such a help to me–and it sounds like your children are like that as well, What a blessing they are:)

Children ARE a blessing, aren’t they?

And, yes, it’s best to start with only a few chickens. LOL

If you want to read about starting out with chickens, check out Laraba’s Homeschool Blog. You’ll have to start about a year ago and find all the chicken posts, but there’s a lot of great reading along the way. http://homeschoolblogger.com/larabak/

    Annie Kate,

Thanks for posting about my chicken entries :-). You are right, I should move my entries into catagories. I feel overwhelmed with trying to change things, though. You’ve done a fabulous job of learning the ins and outs of both the new and old systems. I’m a bare bones blogger so far, as you’ve probably noticed. Our 10 yo dd loves messing around with computers and probably could figure it out, but I’m hesitant to turn her loose on my blog.
Wow, 70 chicks! That is awesome. We talked about chicks this year but I then I got pregnant and life went into survival mode. At the moment, we are very concerned about a neighbor dog that keeps getting loose; this is the same one that massacred our chickens last spring. We’re praying for wisdom about what to do regarding that dog.
I’m so glad your energy is returning. I’m 16+ weeks pregnant now and finally over the nausea and mostly feeling well — except for frequent weird dreams and having trouble sleeping in the early morning hours, which is why I’m writing comments to your blog at 4:19 a.m.!

Step 1: Decide what your categories will be, eg chickens, homeschool, book reviews, and whatever else works for your blog. ( I actually make a paper list and have it in front of me while doing this. In fact, I have to redo some of the old posts, because now we can have more than one category per post.)

Step 2: On your dashboard, go to ‘posts’ and then ‘categories’.

      Step 3: Enter your categories.

Step 4: Then under ‘posts’, go to ‘edit’ and quick edit each of your posts by clicking on the appropriate categories. Do NOT let a child do this, because the trash option is quite prominent and you don’t want to lose anything.

Note: When I’m tired, I find that it’s easy to get all wound up about what the right category should be. It doesn’t really matter, as long as you –and your readers—can find your post. If you want to change category title later, that is easy to do as well.

      I hope that helps.
