We’re halfway! The children have learned so much this school year, and I’m very pleased with their diligence. God has really blessed our homeschool this year. Looking back like this reminds me of the end of the school year and warm, warm summer. Before we can enjoy summer life, though, we’re got a lot more learning to do.
Of course we did a lot of schoolwork this week, but what really stands out in my mind is the reading aloud. We spent hours ‘messing about in boats’ with Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome. It was a blissful ‘holiday,’ camping on an island, and enjoying sailboats, pirates, parrots, treasure, and wild imaginations. Now we’re heading off for unexpected adventure in We Never Meant to Go to Sea by the same author.
As for the high school record / university application project, it is moving along. This week I picked up a course calendar from a local high school to help me finalize and check my course descriptions. I’m hoping to finish it all next week. While that may not be a realistic goal, my final deadline is the end of the month. Yippee!

Reading aloud is one of my favorite parts of school. Those sound like good reads. I just ordered a book about keeping records in high school. I am trying to get an early start. My oldest will be in 8th grade next year. I figure it is not too soon to start practicing keeping track for college applications. Have a blessed weekend.

Yes, it’s a good idea. I kept track of marks…except for a year when I was ill. It’s the other things that are getting to me, including the fact that the marks were not all in one place. So frustrating!

It does indeed feel good to reach the half way point. Although with all the illness this year I know we will go through June.
June is better than July!
And a friend of mine always says, “It’s only homeschool kids who actually have to finish the textbooks. Other kids certainly don’t.”
Ours do usually finish them. Often finishing them the next year is OK, though…except toward the end of highschool in the core subjects.

Congrats on reaching the official halfway point!! I have been keeping grades since my kids were little – one of the few areas where I’ve managed to plan ahead and keep a good paper trail in preparation for high school transcripts and college applications etc. I use Homeschool Tracker and it makes it EASY. 😎
LOL about only homeschooled kids actually having to finish textbooks. Yes, my kids usually have to finish the textbook, even if it has to be done during “summer school” or the following school year.
Funny, isn’t it, but Homeschool Tracker was a disaster for me. Way too complicated and thorough. I was spending all my time with Homeschool Tracker rather than homeschooling my kids. It’s great that there are so many products available for all sorts of different family styles! I am glad it worked for you.
As for grades, we rarely keep them for little kids. The older ones do get grades, though, but not on everything. That is causing some of my issues now. Humph!!
