Some weeks, looking back, it seems like all we did was schoolwork. This week we’ve done so much else as well as a huge amount of formal schoolwork.
First of all, there was the music: Bach’s Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach, played on the organ, various Mozart, Handel, and Telemann pieces played on the recorder, part of the Saint Matthew’s passion on the flute, Genevan tunes on the organ, as well as “For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow” on the guitar and many practice pieces on the organ. I love a house filled with home-made music.
We also read The Adventures of Reddy Fox by Thornton W. Burgess, a delightful blend of fun, excitement, humor, and wisdom. Reddy Fox is so foolish and so familiar! Now we’re enjoying Old Mother West Wind by the same author. I can recall my mother reading these books out loud when I was a child, and it’s so special to be reading them to my crew. These delightful books appeal to all ages.
Miss 13, who is doing a project about war brides, had the amazing opportunity to interview one. That was such a treat!
Mr. 15’s big project for the week was preparing for the University of Waterloo Cayley math competition. This preparation is fantastic practice in problem-solving and logical thinking.
We found boxes of old homeschool work. Field trip reports. Old workbooks. Book reports. A poster for a home-election. Projects for a homemaking course. What a lot of memories that old apple box contained! I’m inspired to do more project-based work with my children, especially the Little Misses.
So, it was a good week for music, reading aloud, projects, memories, and formal schoolwork. It was also a good week for eating. The children outdid themselves in making yummy food, from homemade, gluten-free macaroni and cheese to scalloped potatoes, chocolate pudding, pancakes, and muffins. What’s more, our favorite discount store now stocks gluten-free foods, which are turning out to be better than the expensive options from the health food store!
As for the Great Backyard Bird Count,we saw several flocks of wild turkeys, as well as crows, jays, and chickadees, and we heard a phoebe. On the day I’d planned to count formally, the wind was so strong that the one bird I saw was actually being pushed backwards!

We are bird watchers as well. This year we have not been doing counts. It must be very interesting to see wild turkeys. We get several varities of chickadess, wood peckers, and pine siskins.
