Review: Wonderland Creek by Lynn Austin

Addicted to reading novels, Alice Grace Ripley lost her boyfriend because her nose was always in a book.  The very next day, due to Depression era cutbacks, she lost her dream job at the library.  Rather than stay home and face small-town gossip, Alice decided to hand-deliver a shipment of donated books to a tiny town in eastern Kentucky and to stay a while as a library volunteer.

When she saw the librarian, however, she got the shock of her life.  Many more shocks followed as dreamy Alice discovered that real people and real life could be a lot more interesting than those in books.  Inspired, sometimes through prayer and sometimes at gunpoint, by old ex-slave Lillie, Alice actually began to care for others and to act, believe, love, and live.

Fascinating characters lived along Wonderland Creek. Alice was a sweetheart, Lillie a source of inspiration and courage, Ike a handsome dream, June-Ann pitiable, Maggie a mystery, and Mack—dear, dead Mack—a cause of trouble to the whole town.

This book is balm to one’s soul.  It’s full of God’s good gospel, as well as excitement, love, and danger.  If you plan to read only one book this winter, choose Wonderland Creek.  I recommend it highly.

It’s on my wishlist, now! What ages do you think it is appropriate? Would a 12 year old girl like it?

I’d say 12 is too young. It was written for adults, but I think a 16 year old would enjoy it, depending on the 16 year old.
