Ah, Holidays!

The nest that fell on Miss 9's head

Our family, except for my husband, is blessed with a week off. We are settling in for a blissful winter break.

All I want to do is be lazy, eat dark chocolate (and other good things), read books, and go cross country skiing.  The kids each have their own goals, involving the movie TinTin, music, books, DVD’s, deep-fried foods, and playing outside.  Besides that, I have some ‘real’ work to do, such as organizing the house, the marks, and the schoolwork, and some of the children should catch up on their schoolwork.

But not today.  Today is a real holiday.

We started off well by having left-over Christmas pies for breakfast, delicious apple pie and such rich pumpkin cheesecake that Mr. 16 got to finish the ladies’ left-overs.

Before 9 AM, Miss 9 was out in the barn pulling down the skis and poles.  An old bird nest fell off the ski rack and crowned her, guano and all (shampoo time coming up soon), so she brought it in and we took a picture of it.  Not on her head, of course!

Miss 14 has already been on Create Space, working on the cover of her NaNoWriMo novel.

I’ve skied to the limits of my strength, all the children are either skiing or sledding down our snowy hill, and my husband is shovelling the driveway and chatting with a passerby.  “About his favorite topic,” said Miss 11.  “Us.”

Turkey stock is simmering on the stove, and I’m contemplating the line-up of way too many holiday DVD’s: Lord of the Rings; the complete Jane Austen (no, we’re not watching them all!); Henry V; Much Ado About Nothing; Katherine’s Farm; Mendelssohn, the Nazis and Me; and Yehudi Menuhin, Violin.  Yes, you do see strong influences of Ambleside Online! Henry V was last term’s Shakespeare, Much Ado about Nothing is this term’s, and this term’s composer is Mendelssohn.

Besides that, there’s the old year to contemplate and the new one to plan for, dozens of butternut squashes to freeze, mending to finish, embroideries to enjoy, and books to read beside the fire.  It all sounds so blissful!

Wishing you and your families a refreshing holiday week, so you will be ready for a new year of learning and living to God’s glory.
