Commenter-Friendly Anti-Spam Plugin

Monday my Akismet spam plugin caught 97 spam commentsYes, that’s right, 97!  At least they were caught, but I really wish that they hadn’t shown up at all.  Spam takes time to deal with, is usually unpleasant if not down-right evil, and reduces the quality of blogging life.

So what was I to do? I don’t like captcha codes.  I did not want to make it hard for my friends to comment, and I personally find those captcha codes difficult to use. Sometimes a difficult captcha code even stops me from leaving a comment.

Then I remembered Blogging with AmyHer comment form has a little box to click to prove you’re not a spammer.  Very simple for the commenter.  And, Amy being Amy, she tells you the name of the plug in:  Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin.

I simply went to my dashboard, searched for the plugin, plugged it in, and got rid of my huge spam traffic.  Tuesday I had 0 spam comments–yes, zero So simple, and so satisfying.

Now when I blog I have:

  • No more filtering through offensive messages to verify that there’s no valid comment mixed in…or just deleting all that spam and hoping no friend’s comment is deleted as well.
  • No more stupid, offensive, or wicked ideas coming at me from my own blog.
  • More joy, purity, and peace.

The Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin works for me!

Disclosure: I am in no way compensated for telling you about the Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin nor about Blogging with Amy.  I’m just sharing some information that makes blogging more pleasant for me.

Sounds like a great idea. So glad that you haven’t gone down the captcha code route-it is so frustrating getting them wrong time after time and so difficult to work out letters and numbers that run into each other.

I noticed it the other day and applaud you! That is a ton of spam! I hate captcha, too. Blogger changed theirs to even more cumbersome captcha. I really wish people would turn it off and just moderate comments. Usually they have both which is redundant. Checking a simple box is easy. 🙂

I didn’t even see the box the other day, so one of my comments might have been considered a spam. 🙂 I will definitely look into this.

I will add my voice to those who dislike Captcha! I use Akismet, but am glad to see something else I can use, too. I have seen those little check boxes. It’s nice to know what they are.
    Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! (I don’t think I can say that enough times!!) 🙂 We were getting over 100 spam comments a day and it got old fast. I just installed this plugin…YAY!

I use Akismet, but then have to wade through the garbage to find the ones accidently marked as spam. I just re-installed an anti-spam one I used to use again. If it doesn’t cut spam way down, I may try this one. 🙂

As mentioned, I use both Akismet and this new Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin.

To update, I’ve had less than a dozen spammy comments in the last week…and they looked more like ‘human’ spam. I’m so happy with it!
