How We Fall Into Sin

Lord of the Rings Trilogy

We’re all confronted with sin, we all fall into it, and (hopefully) we all want to avoid it.

While studying Tolkein’s Fellowship of the Ring in Omnibus 2 we came across a simple description of the path into sin. Of course, I knew it all of this, but had never put it together logically before.   Knowing how sin works may help us resist it, so I’m spelling it out here for all of us.

Fallling into temptation, such as that presented by Tolkein’s Ring, always follows a certain pattern:

  1. First we’re tempted by our own evil desires. (James 1)
  2. Then we flirt with sin, walking in the counsel of the ungodly. (Psalm 1)
  3. Then, refusing to repent, we stand in the path of sinners. (Psalm 1)
  4. Getting comfortable with our sin, we sit down in the seat of the scornful. (Psalm 1)
  5. And, finally, God gives them (not us, we pray) up to their own sin. (Romans 1)

If you want to learn more about resisting evil, a literary approach is to study how Tolkein’s characters respond to the Ring.  Of course, the Bible is full of warnings and advice as well.

What a good list. It’s always good to remember things like this, especially if we’ve been walking with the Lord for a while. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

This is a great, simple list that breaks down how we fall into sin, which is often due to our own desires. Thank you for sharing and linking up with Simply Helping Him! Blessings!
