Luke Palmer, an undercover Texas Ranger hunting for a notorious train robber, is stationed to the small town of Brenham as a telephone repair and salesman. The switchboard operator, Georgie Gail, a beautiful, opinionated birdwatcher, does not appreciate her new boss. She has her own ideas about many things including train robbers, having met the chivalrous outlaw himself during a train robbery.
Excitement and romance increase as Luke gets closer to his prey and to Miss Georgie.
Although this fast-paced story contains a bit too much kissing, both Georgie and Luke are believable characters. Georgie comes face to face with the realization that what seemed like a good deed may cause trouble, and Luke matures as he faces difficult choices between duty and love.
Guns, hats, birds, and miles and miles of galvanized telephone wire feature in this exciting read. It’s a lot of good fun and would make a relaxing winter get-away, but don’t expect any deep insights.
