Snowshoes

Well, although we did not get as much snow as some people, we now have enough for me to try out my snowshoes.

I got them from my parents for my birthday, a  surprising and wonderful gift.  They are not heavy at all, and even in the fluffy snow we got from yesterday’s storm, they keep me from sinking very deep.

My husband went walking with me the first time I used them.  He set up the bindings for me and then kept the dogs off the snowshoes while we walked.

There’s something special about walking up a little rise into the sunshine with hubby beside me and three happy dogs cavorting in the snow up ahead.  It’s also funny to watch a dog try to leave his markings in powdery snow that’s up to his back!

As you can see, these snowshoes also have ‘teeth’ for grip so that I’ll be able to walk on slippery ground as well.

  1. How fun. I’ve always wanted to snowshoe but haven’t done it yet. Suppose I should have done that before I moved out of the mountains of Colorado! It’s on my to-do list for sure.

Do you think you could walk a long way in those? I can’t imagine what it must feel like to walk on top of the snow. So cool.

No, I couldn’t walk a very long way yet, but in deep snow I can walk a longer distance with them than without them. They are wonderful to walk on; the part my foot is attached to rotates in the snowshoe, so the strides are all very natural.

Those are great! Enjoy and remember to bring along your camera so we can see where you go. 🙂

Yes, bringing the camera is important! Thanks for the reminder. We forgot it for last week’s Rideau Trail walk, and that’s such a pity.

We want to get snow shoes bad, but with 4 of us, it’s pretty expensive. And I really wouldn’t be able to just start with one pair, I don’t want to snowshoe by myself. 🙂 I hope you enjoy yours a lot. 🙂

They are not cheap, that’s for sure. Perhaps you can get some second hand in the spring.

Since I’m the least fit person in the family, I cannot walk in deep snow even though the others can. Nor can I cross country ski; that takes way too much energy.

But I can snowshoe while they walk…or at least, that’s the plan. We’ll be looking for some snowshoes for the rest of the family on Kijiji as well.
