Two Reasons to Organize Mama

Whether our homeschool style is structured or free-flowing (and this has varied by month, by year and by subject area), we have discovered that the most learning happens when I am organized.  When mom knows what she is doing, and why, and where, and when, and how, everything else follows so much more smoothly.

I think there are two reasons for this.

One is that a confident mom inspires confidence and security in her children—as in, “I don’t know why we’re doing this, but Mom does, so it’s OK.”  Barbara Frank has written a post detailing exactly what I mean.

The other is that an organized mom can concentrate on living creatively with her children rather than vaguely wondering

what should I do next?

and are there fuzzies growing in the fridge?

and should we do the SAT now or next year?

and will hubby have any clean shirts tomorrow?

and will this be enough writing for grade 9?

and is this what I should be doing right now?

and has the dog run out of dog food?

and is there a better way to teach fractions?

and WHAT will we have for supper?

The Teaching Home  has a series of newsletters  about going Back to Homeschool, full of sensible organizing tips.   Even if you have started the school year already, it is worth your while to check out this series.  (Actually, The Teaching Home newsletter used to arrive in my inbox regularly, and after seeing this series, I’m subscribing again.)

Ultimately, however, thriving in our lives and our homeschool is not about me being organized, although that is a significant part of it.  It’s about God being in charge, and that gives the ultimate confidence and security—as in, “I don’t know why this is happening, but God does, so it’s OK.”

Blessings to all of you, and see you on Saturday for another Tea Time with Annie Kate.

Well I just wrote a post about organization myself! I'm looking forward to checking out the articles in teaching home.

The grocery shopping worked out well for the time. Now my daughter who did the driving just left for a year in Taiwan so I'll be thinking of another plan for the next season in my life. I still have a son who drives but he has other commitments at the time that works best for grocery shopping. I'll keep you posted!

You said it!! If only I could remind my self of this when I think of how much work it'll take to organize something.
