When this long-awaited book was finally in my hands, I was awed. It’s a work of art. The (imitation?) leather cover is beautifully embossed and stitched, and the title is stamped in gold. To the amazement of my little girls, the book’s pages are gilt edged. It even has a sewn binding, something that is rarely seen these days.
Then I opened the book. I actually had to touch the paper to convince myself that it was not the thick parchment it seemed to be. The pages themselves are beautifully laid out with warm brown type on the luxurious-looking pages.
Only then did I focus on the words. Jack Countryman has compiled many passages from the King James Bible under 45 topical headings such as God’s Love, God’s Grace, God’s Righteousness, Our Salvation, Our Humility, and His Sacrifice. Interspersed with these topics is a history of the King James Bible itself, from its origins and tremendous influence to its revisions. The English used in these historical sections is, unfortunately, rather clumsy at times.
Even so, this book is a worthy gift for any Christian. It would also be suitable for someone who loves beauty and quality but who does not yet know and love the Bible. Perhaps you know someone who could be reached for God in this way.
