encouraging each other

for the bodies God has given us
Welcome to the Health and Fitness Check-In column of The Christian Home Carnival. For encouragement and accountability, you can check in using the comments at the bottom of this post. Please feel free to join any time, and at whatever level of fitness and health you currently have.
I was active this week, despite a sore neck. In fact, for the first time in years I was able to take the children to swimming lessons and, get this, I swam two laps! Looking back three or even two years, this would never have seemed possible, but there I was, actually swimming! I also took several walks and strolled to the polling station yesterday to vote in the Ontario provincial elections.
Do my eye exercises 3x a day … No, but I desperately need to since my eyes seem to be getting even worse…or maybe it was just the pain of my neck that made everything seem worse.
Go for a walk at least once a day … I did walk a fair bit, and Jenn, I’m now wearing my pedometer again. Thanks for the encouragement! It’s a bit flaky—sometimes it beeps at me and sets the count back to zero—but I guess I’m doing about 6000 steps a day.
Do calisthenics at least 3 times a week … I did them some of the time, but when you need to use your hands to manually turn your head, you’re not going to be doing many calisthenics. (In case you’re interested, I had issues with the C2C3 joint in the neck, causing immobility and pain from my cheekbone and ear all the way down to my shoulder and collarbone. How did I do that to myself, you wonder? I slept wrong, apparently!) Now I have neck exercises to do as well…lying down, because it’s too hard on the neck to do them with the 10-15 pound weight of my head pushing down! But I feel much better, and most of the pain is gone.
Avoid sugar six days a week … No. We ate peanut butter cookies and they were delicious…but too sweet, of course. They did not make me feel good.
Eat lots of vegetables and yoghurt … Yes. Before the frost came, we picked all the tender greens. One day I sautéed some with ground beef and served it on butternut squash rather than rice or potatoes. That was delicious. My homemade yoghurt turned out great again, and we ate a lot.
Rest daily, and do more fun things with the kids … No, I did not rest enough. The end of harvest season is like that. On the other hand, we did read stories, visit a butterfly exhibit (pictures tomorrow, DV), and go swimming.
How about you? Did you exercise, eat well, and relax happily this week? Let’s encourage each other to care well for the bodies God has given us. 6000 steps is awesome! My pedometer gives me fits too, so I don’t wear it much now. Hooray for your victories this week. Have you ever tried Blue Agave for a sweetener? I buy it for my coffee and I used it for the first time making blueberry muffins. They were great, not too sweet, not too dry. I’m off to camp. Husband and I will bike tonight, hike tomorrow and Sunday. I am looking forward to it! That’s a huge victory for me. Thank you for your encouraging comment. 🙂
I’ve never tried Blue Agave, although I’ve heard of it. Isn’t it very pricey?

Sounds like a good week. I have worked out 3 times this week, which is huge with the problems I was having in my hip. I think that is better now. I’m still trying to watch my portion sizes. I do ok one meal and then mess up the next, but it’s a work in progress. I tried the pedometer thing too, but I have a cheap one and it kept resetting itself all the time too. I gave up on it. 🙂
Baby steps will get you there! Just keep right on keeping on!

You are doing lots of walking. I hope your neck feels better next week. The swimming sounds fun!
