Summer Project: Plan Those High School Years

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” 

Haven’t we all heard that and not done anything about it in our own lives…and survived?

When it comes to the high school years, however, this quote can be so true.  I’ve heard of sad mix-ups that could have been prevented by a bit of planning, and it seems that those who plan for these years sail through them with much less wear and tear than others. 

As Christopher Robin said,

“Organizing is what you do before you do something,

so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up.” 

We don’t want our children’s high school studies to be “all mixed up.”

That’s the advantage of 100 Top Picks, the book I discussed for Tuesday’s Tea Time.   It encourages us to think about the goals and realities of our home school, and it shows us step by step how to do that.  The ‘how to home school high school’ books and course I described earlier provide helpful guidance specifically for the high school years. 

While thinking about my summer, I originally forgot that I need to work on our high school plans some more.  In fact, it is probably one of the summer’s most important projects for my teens and myself.  We’ll need to go through all of our goals prayerfully and determine how best to meet them in the available time.

To me, it’s an overwhelming project.   But I think we’ll be able to break it up into small tasks and do a little bit every day.  If we make organizing this project the first step to doing it, we will—hopefully—ensure that the next year’s high school plans will not be “all mixed up.”  Last summer we were unable to do a good job of this, so we have some catch-up organizing to do as well. 

Of course, the earlier grades can also benefit from a bit of planning and pondering.  That is another summer project at our house.  I do feel rather overwhelmed with projects right now…. Sigh.

But I’ll keep reminding myself, “Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.” (Psalm 127:1a)  We’re home schooling for God’s glory, ultimately.  Therefore we will ask for His blessing and accept His refreshing gift of sleep rather than worrying about the home schooling.  I’ll keep you posted on our planning progress!
