Fit Mommy Friday

After last week’s wake up call, I’ve been diligent about exercising.  Besides gardening and regular walks, we spent a happy but strenuous afternoon in the river. After that, I’m stiff and sore, but not weak. That’s a thrilling development.

You see, for several years exercise would just make my muscles so weak that they would hardly function afterwards.  They did not get stiff at all; instead they would give up, it seemed.  “Exercise intolerance,” one doctor called it, and threw up his hands hopelessly.  “Maybe it’s mitochondrial damage,” said another one, and checked me for many things including celiac disease. (Mitchondrial issues seem to be rather nebulous and avant garde, but I do have celiac disease.)   This doctor encourages me to be active but reminds me of the importance of pacing myself so that I slowly heal rather than do more damage.  It’s a fine line between being active and overdoing it, but I’m learning.

That’s why the old Fit Mommy accountability meme made such a huge difference in my life.  Mrs. White’s Healthy Home Link Up is wonderful and provides a lot of interesting information, and now it also includes Fit Mommy check-ins.  So if you want accountability, link up!

Here’s how I did with my goals this week:

Do my eye exercises 3x a day…  No.  But I do try to spend more time outside, relaxing my eyes by looking at far away things.  When I started these a few weeks ago, I tried to do too much at once.  I need to build up much more slowly….

Go for a walk at least once a day… Almost every day.  Yippee!

Do calisthenics at least 3 times a week… Yes!

Avoid sugar six days a week … No.  Birthday cake.  Ice cream. A cola to stay awake while driving.  Brownies.  Life was just full of sweets this week. But at parties I just smell the gluten-filled goodies, and that saves me thousands of calories.

Eat lots of vegetables and yoghurt… With melons filling up the fridge, we don’t buy enough milk for me to make yoghurt at a whim.  What’s more, our water pressure is so low that washing dishes is a slow chore, and washing out my yoghurt pail needs a lot of hot water. So I didn’t make any this week.  We ate quite a few vegetables, though, and lots of salad.  There’s something so energizing about salad!  And we ate asparagus.

Rest daily, and do more fun things with the kids… I rested every day except yesterday, when the children had track and field.  It was a wonderful day, but suddenly so cold that I shivered most of the day despite four layers of clothing as well as a winter scarf.  Many moms wrapped themselves up in their picnic blankets (a very colorful sight), but the kids were active enough to wear only their jackets.

How about you?  Did you exercise, eat well, and relax happily this week?
