Review: Christmas at Harrington’s by Melody Carlson

Christmas at Harrington's, Melody Carlson, 978-0-8007-1925-8

After surviving the demoralizing unfairness of her past, Lena tries to begin a new life for herself in a new town.  She makes friends right away and miraculously lands a job as Mrs. Santa for Harrington’s Department Store.  Lena loves being Mrs. Santa, a job that highlights her ability to connect with children, but the past cannot remain hidden.  This is the story of how Lena faces injustice, learns to stand up for truth, and discovers that God is good even though life may be bad.

The delightful cover of Christmas at Harrington’s captivated me, although I did not expect much from the book.  However, instead of pure fluff, I found a touching story of hope and goodness amidst the harsh realities of life.  The characters are believable, the romance is minimal (less than one page, actually), and the issues are relevant.  As Mrs. Santa, Lena even takes the opportunity to spread the gospel, with ready answers for those who object to associating Jesus with Santa.

This book can be judged by its cover.  Christmas at Harrington’s is satisfying way to relax for the holidays, and poignant reminder that love and second chances may often be the essential gifts.
