Eating habits change. When our family first went gluten-free, we put a lot of effort into making breads and other baked goods, especially for lunch and breakfast. Now we rely more and more on other foods: yoghurt with or without flaxseed, buckwheat porridge, potatoes with toppings, crust-less pumpkin pie, left-overs, and so on. Of course, we still do eat cornbread, pancakes, muffins, and even bread, but not daily. Some health gurus say this is a good thing.
Yesterday I noticed just how many greens there are in the garden, so we’ll try green drinks again. I can almost hear the kids groan!
Here’s how I did with my goals this week:
Do my eye exercises 3x a day … Nope. I did find out (by trying on some old glasses) that years ago my eyes were as bad as they are now. They improved remarkably when we moved to a place where we spent hours every day outside. Hmmm. That’s something to consider, and not just for me!
Go for a walk at least once a day … Yes, and my husband comes with me now. He hurt his joints a bit and needs to take a break from more intense exercise for a while. That’s my gain!
Do calisthenics at least 3 times a week … Yes, and the physiotherapist is starting me on exercises to stabilize my shoulders, hips, and knees so that I will be able to play badminton and do other activities without hurting my joints!
Avoid sugar six days a week … I’m doing fairly well with this, except for our super-sweet fresh strawberries. We have only an early variety, and our strawberry harvest is almost finished…but now the red currants are almost ripe. Yum!
Eat lots of vegetables and yoghurt … We ate quite a few vegetables. One of our goals is to empty the freezers, and there are still quite a few in there. And, of course, the garden is producing lots of greens as well as the first handfuls of snap peas. As for yoghurt, well, I forgot to make any. My list of things to do was keeping me too busy. That’s another reason I love these Fit Mommy Friday check-ins: every week they remind me of my fitness goals.
Rest daily, and do more fun things with the kids … No, I did not rest every afternoon. There was just too much going on, but somehow I seemed to manage quite well. It helps so much if I go to bed on time! I always seem to wake up at the same time, no matter how late I go to bed, so if I stay up late, the next day is not good.
The kids and I had fun, too. Besides the usual hanging around and laughing during meals, we shopped for clothes, bought camping treats, had friends over, swam, read aloud, and ate popcorn together. We even watched a bit more of Emma, the 2009 version.
How about you? Did you exercise, eat well, and relax happily this week?

I apologize, Annie Kate! I had read this earlier in the week and fully intended to leave you a comment then. I’m sorry your husband was hurt, but it does seem to have a silver lining in that you can walk together now. 🙂
