Fit Mommy Friday: Gluten Episode

encouraging each other

to care well

for the bodies God has given us

Welcome to the Health and Fitness Check-In column of The Christian Home Carnival, posted weekly. For encouragement and accountability, you can check in using the comments at the bottom of this post. Please feel free to join any time, and at whatever level of fitness and health you currently have.

So, last Saturday I was happily busy in my house, cleaning, ironing, making corn cakes for lunch, and sometimes sitting down at the computer for a few moment’s rest.  And then, around 12:30, I was suddenly overwhelmed with exhaustion.  First I blamed it on too many trips up the stairs, but soon it was evident that I was having a gluten reaction. Some celiacs respond to gluten with upset tummies, but I just get very, very weak and foggy.  My husband and children pitched in, doing everything from meals to laundry, but it took until Tuesday before I was functioning normally again.

People are so very different!  Some can manage one kind of food, some not; some can do one kind of exercise, some not.  This applies to all aspects of a person: some think and feel one way, some another….  It is so important to remember that people react differently to all of life!

Anyways, here’s how I did with my goals, although I can’t remember much about Saturday and Sunday.

Record my fitness accomplishments each day…Mostly.

Do my eye exercises 5x a week …  I did them at least 3x.

Go for a daily walk and take at least 6000 steps a day … I went for several walks and my pedometer totals were 5500, 3000, 6900,6500,7700. Saturday afternoon, Sunday, and Monday I did very little.

Do my physio exercises daily and slowly build up to the half program by December 31 … Several times, but they are getting boring.  I talked to my physiotherapist about T-Tapp which some of you use.  She approved most of it for me, and also agreed that I could use an exercise ball as a chair for short periods of time each day.

Avoid sugar five days a week … After the gluten episode, sweets revolt me.  It makes no sense, since there’s no relation between gluten and sugar, but I’ll gladly take advantage of it while it lasts.

Eat lots of vegetables, including fresh ones, and yoghurt … I crave vegetables and we’ve been eating so many that my husband wondered if we were planning to switch to that meat and vegetables diet.  He really likes the idea, especially the meat part.

Relax daily… Most days, yes.  But there’s something very frightening about being so susceptible to an ‘invisible’ agent like gluten, and when my legs hardly worked and I could barely write after the gluten incident I felt very, very stressed.   Like most people, I don’t even really want to admit my total dependence on God, let alone on other people.  Another little lesson in life….

Have fun with the kids, including active fun… Well, not really active.  Even at the pool, I watched the kids swim and then helped the older ones with math after they had finished their laps.  But we did read aloud a lot, play some games, and work on Christmas cards together.

How about you? Did you exercise, eat well, and relax happily this week? Let’s encourage each other to care well for the bodies God has given us. I’m sorry you had the gluten mess you up for a few days. We are weak creatures totally dependent on what happens to us and around us. You did some good walking!

T-Tapp should help you build some muscle! It is great for so many things. I need to get back to the Basic Workout. I’m building up slowly as my back can handle it.

Can you join if you are not a mommy? I would love the encouragement and accountability of a group of Christian ladies working on their fitness together.
