Second Breakfast, Hobbit Style

Seventy-five years ago last Friday, Tolkien published The Hobbit.  That book, together with The Lord of the Rings trilogy, changed the literary world.

Miss 14 decided that we should celebrate by enjoying a second breakfast, as hobbits would.  So she gathered recipes, planned, and, early Friday morning, started cooking.  Miss 10 helped her, dressed in a bright skirt, the closest she could get to girl hobbit clothing.

Second Breakfast, Hobbit Style

 The Menu

Bacon

Eggs

Apple scones

Tater patties

Lembas (delectable elf cookies)

Apple pie

Strawberry-cherry crisp

Pickles

Raspberries

Cheese

Rhubarb jam

Grape jelly

Butter

Tea

Mulled apple juice

Inspired by all of the activity, Mr. 17 bought a can of whipping cream, the finishing touch.

Precisely at 11AM the feast was ready and we savored mouthful after mouthful of delicious food while listening to music from the Lord of the Rings sound track.  Rather than telling stories, hobbit-style, we read aloud three chapters of The Home Ranch.

While we are not all fans of The Hobbit, we do all love hobbit food!

Note that Miss 14 adapted each of these recipes to be gluten-free, except for the strawberry-cherry crisp which contained oats that were most likely contaminated with wheat.   I expect that she will eventually publish the recipes on her blog, and if she does, I will let you know.

Oh my goodness! This is fantastic! We are all fans here…my eldest (now 13) read The Hobbit and the LoTR last year. We’ve seen the LoTR movies a few times to be honest, lol, and have a countdown calendar to the release of The Hobbit in December. 😀

Having said all that, I never really thought about doing a second breakfast. And I feel ashamed to admit that. :/ They actually have some pieces of hobbit costumes left over from halloween a couple of years ago (cloaks, pointy ears and big hairy (eeek!) feet things, lol…this will be a fun Sunday family treat soon!

Thanks so much for sharing! 😀

That sounds like a lot of fun. My daughter is counting down the weeks to when the movie comes out, and she already has the LOTR trilogy. The food looks really yummy too.
