So, we have three freezers full of produce, homegrown chicken, and sale meats. And a pantry full of jams, fruits, and various kinds of pickled vegetables. And a spare bedroom floor full of butternut squashes and too many pumpkins.
Obviously, it’s time to focus on eating all this good stuff. To empty the freezers by the end of May, we need to remove about a shoe box’s worth of food a day. That’s one large chicken. Or a large frozen fruit salad and a package of spinach. Or two tubs of soup stock and a package of leeks. Etc. I think we can do that.
It’s no problem to eat squash every few days, but I’m going to call a local soup kitchen and see if they would like a dozen pumpkins. It would be a pity to see them go to waste. And, of course, I’m looking for good gluten-free pumpkin recipes. We tried pumpkin spice lattes today, and the texture was all wrong with our homegrown pumpkins. On to the next recipe!
Right now the home-canned food in the pantry is not a priority, but we’ll eat it when we feel like it.
It’s a real blessing to have so much food available. We can eat our own delicious produce and save money on sale items we’ve bought and frozen. Furthermore, we hardly need to shop, which saves a lot of time as well as money. Time, these days, is in short supply since I’m reviewing pre-calculus to help my son with his math and learning logic to help Miss 15. In fact, this week I’m spending my weekly grocery shopping time studying, which is definitely a good thing.
And now, human nature being quite contrary, I have the urge to go grocery shopping!
You see, I’m reviewing a wonderful cookbook and want to try all sorts of delicious recipes full of whipping cream, cream cheese, and other yummy ingredients. But, a pantry challenge is a pantry challenge, and my husband agrees we should focus on eating what we have. Since no one here really needs that many calories, we’ll save the decadent recipes for Valentine’s day or something, and I’ll post the cookbook review later.
In the meantime, we’ll enjoy good food, staying at home, and learning together. God has blessed us so richly!
You are truly blessed to have so much room, food and the need to eat through your freezers and pantry. We do have some frozen foods and things, but we still grocery shop every other week. I’m reading a fiction book from Lauraine Snelling based on the late 1800’s and they never ate what they felt like eating or what they had a ‘taste’ for. They always ate what they had prepared from their gardens and/or hunts. Quite a different perspective than in this day and age. 🙂
Yes, we are truly blessed!
And living with the old-fashioned perspective is good for us once in a while, I think.
